This new
book tells the fascinating story of why The British
settled in Gothenburg and how a number of English and
Scottish merchant families have contributed to the
economic and culture development of the city. Trade
across the North Sea, especially in iron-bars and
timber, has for nearly three hundred years been of vast
importance in the growth of the port of Gothenburg. The
influence of this trade on the commercial and social
life of Gothenburg is reflected in that the city is
sometimes called “Little London”.
The story of
the lives and livelihoods of members of the Carnegie,
Chalmers, Chapman, Dickson, Hall, Gibson and Keiller families - to the name but a few – is told against the
backdrop of the major historical events in Europe. And
that the influence of these families was positive and
strong is indicated by the naming of streets in the city
after them.

Författaren, John R Ashton,
är född i Manchester, England. Han studerade juridik i
London innan han flyttade till Göteborg. Verksam som
konsult i engelskundervisning till Göteborgs
skolstyrelse 1952 – 82. Hans då nydanande läromedel i
engelska för grundskolan – “Hands Up!” – har rönt stor
popularitet i Sverige och Norge. John Ashton har haft
flera uppdrag inom den anglosaxiska sfären i Göteborg:
vice ordförande för Engelska Skolan (1960 – 79), ledamot
av Engelska Kyrkans (St Andrews) råd (1974 – 98). Sedan
1980 är han medlem av den historiefyllda British Factory
i Göteborg och dess nuvarande ordförande.
The author, John R Ashton
MPE, was born in Manchester, England. Studied law in
London. Employed by Gothenburg education Authority as
English language teaching consultant 1952 – 1982. Author
of English language teaching series in Sweden and
Norway. Vice Chairman of the English School in
Gothenburg 1960 – 1979. Member of the English (St
Andrew’s) Church Council in Gothenburg 1974 – 1998.
Since 1980 member of the ancient British Factory in
Gothenburg and present chairman. |
